Two Linguistic Pioneers

UCSD Linguistics regrets to announce the enormous losses of two emeritus professors and foundational members of the department, Edward S. Klima and Sige-Yuki Kuroda.

Congratulations!

John Moore has been appointed the new Provost of Muir College at UCSD. 

Naja Ferjan Ramirez has accepted a post-doctoral research position with Patricia Kuhl, co-director of The Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences (I-LABS) at the University of Washington. She will be conducting behavioral and neuroimaging studies with infants and children.

Scott Seyfarth has received a National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Studies Institute grant to conduct research at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand in summer, 2013.

Sharon Rose has received a KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) Visiting Professor fellowship for 2013-14 to be held at Leiden University. 

Lucien Carroll has been awarded a UCMexus dissertation grant for his project "Ixpantepec Nieves Mixtec Word Prosodic Phonology"

 Rachel Mayberry has been awarded a 5 year R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIDCD) to investigate Age of acquisition effects on sign language development and brain processing. 

Lisa Rosenfelt has accepted a post-doctoral research positionin the Vision, Action, Cognition Lab at the Université Paris 7 

Gabriela Caballero has a received a 30 month grant from the National Science Foundation Documenting Endangered Languages Program for her research project "A reference grammar of Choguita Rarámuri (Tarahumara)." 

Rebecca Colavin successfully defended her dissertation, Phonotactic Probability in Amharic: a psycholinguistic and computational investigation.

Bożena Pająk successfully defended her dissertation, Inductive Inference in Non-Native Speech Processing and Learning. Bozena is now a post-doctoral research fellow at the Center for Language Sciences at the University of Rochester.

Roger Levy and Keith Rayner (UCSD Psychology) have been awarded a five-year R01 research grant from the NIH (NICHD) on Linguistic Processes in Sentence Comprehension and Reading.

Roger Levy has received a 5-year Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation for his project "Rational Language Processing with Uncertain and Noisy Input".

Mark Myslin was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

Center for Research in Language NIH Predoctoral Training Fellowships for 2012-13 were awarded to three linguistics students: Simone GieselmanNaja Ferjan Ramirez and Page Piccinini.

Roger Levy has been named a 2012 Sloan Research Fellow. The two-year fellowship recognizes researchers for distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field.
